Get Cozy! A Fall Home Checklist

Woodstock real estate home checklist

Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves… and other obstructions!

The leaves are changing and the temperatures are falling, which means now is the time to prepare your home for the cold winter months! Check off this fall home maintenance checklist to ensure you can enjoy the season from the comfort of your home-sweet-home.

Tune up your heating system

It’s probably been quite a while since your heater was on, so don’t wait until a cold snap to discover that there’s a problem. Schedule an appointment with an HVAC company to make sure your heater is in good condition to keep you toasty warm through the winter.

Prevent energy loss

You’d be amazed at how much warm air you can lose through cracks and gaps in your house. All that warm air flowing out wastes money and energy, so keep your heating bill lower by plugging any cracks or holes with caulk. Take a walk around your home to look for areas of air leakage, taking special notice around doors, windows, and anywhere plumbing or electrical elements enter the home.

Keep an eye out for issues inside as well, especially near dropped ceilings, duct work, around outlets and light switches, in the attic, and around door and window frames. Check out these tips for more ways to save energy this winter.

Check your roof and gutters

Make sure gutters are clear of debris, which can clog them and cause water damage to your roof and interior. It’s especially important to do so after the leaves have fallen to ensure your gutters are free of leaves and ready to handle winter precipitation.

Walk around your home and look at the roof. If you spot missing or damaged shingles, replace them immediately. Repair or replace rusty flashing around your chimney and vents. Keep an eye out for moss, because large patches could indicate that your roof is rotting. In that case, it’s time to call a professional.

Prepare your chimney

There’s nothing better than curling up by a roaring fire in the winter, which is why fireplaces are often a huge selling point to home buyers (as well as their visual appeal). If you’re looking forward to enjoying cozy fire in your Woodstock home, it’s important to make sure your chimney is ready to go. Have your chimney cleaned by a professional chimney sweep annually, and make sure the fireplace, chimney, and vents are clean. If you notice any air leaks around your fireplace, be sure to seal them with materials that can take the heat, like sheet metal.
